nuclear facilities. Japan’s nuclear industry is as diverse as the country itself. All technical
tours are covered by the registration fee.

Tour 1-1: Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

Note: Knowledge transfer from Plant Manager of Fukushima Daini NPS is planned. At the
Fukushima Daini NPS, all four units lost heat removal function, which remove heat from the
reactors to the final heat sinks, due to the tsunami damage. However, while implementing
mitigation measures in accordance with emergency operating procedures, operators restored the heat removal function and achieved cold shutdown of all units. This should bring you valuable and seldom experiences.
Tour 2-2: Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station

Tour 3: Nuclear Science Research Institute of JAEA

Visiting Facilities: Visitors can visit 1 – J-PARC and choose one facility from 2 – RFEF and NSRR, 3 – BECKY and 4 – Radioactive waste storage facility.
- J-PARC(Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex)
It has three proton accelerators and three research facilities with using MW-class high power proton beams.


2. RFEF (Reactor Fuel Examination Facility), NSRR(Nuclear Safety Research Reactor)
RFEF performs post irradiation examinations on LWR spent fuel and materials to evaluate the safety and reliability. NSRR is the exclusive reactor for nuclear fuel safety research.


3. BECKY (Back-end Fuel Cycle Key Elements Research Facility)
Research for the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle, such as spent fuel reprocessing. And developing a transmutation system of MAs and LLFPs.


4. Radioactive waste storage facility
It stores 130 thousand drums of radioactive waste packages

Tour 4: Oarai Institute of JAEA

- JOYO (Experimental Fast Reactor)
JOYO is a proto-type sodium-cooled fast reactor for experimental - HTTR (High Temperature engineering Test Reactor)
HTTR is a unique gas-cooled reactor. HTTR restarted from 2021. - AtheNA
AtheNa has a large sodium loop for tests of the coolability of core.
Tour 5: Tokai Nuclear Power Station
